Built in the 4^th century, but remodelled many times until the 17^th century, this Cathedral was one of the first domed churches. It was one of the first Christian sanctuaries, built following a dream that St Gregory the Illuminator had, which indicated the place where the first Armenian church should be built. Etchmiadzine is a two-word word meaning “the descent of the only son.” It is the seat of the supreme authority of the Armenian Apostolic Church, comparable to the Vatican for the Catholic Church.
