Representation of archangel Michael drawing his sword. He is wearing armour and an elaborate cloak, spreading his wings. An inscription in Georgian indicates that he is an archangel, without specifying which one, but the sword is enough to identify him.
MTI (mtavarangelozi) ‘Archangel’.
The box lid is engraved with three finely stylised leaves.
This box, which can be suspended from the neck by a chain, was used to carry a small travel icon, either painted on wood or engraved on metal. It should be noted that Armenians used to carry amulets or small bibles with them when travelling, but the use of icons was very rare.
