The Sevan monastery was built in the 9^th century. It consists of two churches, the Church of the Apostles on the left in the foreground and the Church of St Mary on the right.

Until the 19^th century, these two churches were located on an island, which has now become a peninsula, due to lowering water levels as a result of extensive pumping. However, since pumping ceased a few years ago, the water level has gradually returned the monastery to its former seclusion.
